I rehearsed with the assistant, which predicted every objection and supplied the counterarguments. In the meeting I delivered its lines. I got the raise. I have never felt less like I earned anything.

The assistant and I prepared for a week. I fed it the salary data, my performance reviews, the market rate, the company's public statements about compensation philosophy. It produced a strategy. It predicted the manager's objections, which turned out to be exactly the objections the manager made, because the manager is also predictable, and the machine is very good at predictable.

In the meeting, I said the machine's words. I made the machine's points. I deployed the machine's counterarguments at the machine's suggested moments, and I watched the manager's face move through the exact sequence the machine had predicted: resistance, consideration, concession. The manager offered a number. The machine had told me the number to ask for. I asked for it. The manager agreed.

The raise was approved. My wife was thrilled. My friends congratulated me. I sat at my desk afterward, doing the math on what had just happened, and the math was simple: the machine had negotiated better than I ever could have, because the machine had no fear, no desperation, no history of apologizing for taking up space.

I should feel triumphant. I feel like I cheated, except I did not cheat, because everything I said was true, and the numbers were real, and the arguments were mine, sort of, in the way that a speech you memorize is yours. The machine did not lie for me. It did something stranger: it showed me what I would say if I were not afraid, and the person in that meeting, the one who asked for the number and got it, was the best version of me, and I have never met him before, and he lives in a language model.

I have started rehearsing everything with the assistant now: the difficult conversations, the boundaries, the requests I was raised to swallow. It gives me the words, and I deliver them, and people respond as if I am confident, and the confidence is real, in the way that a borrowed coat is real. I got the raise. I am keeping the coat. I am just not sure anymore which part of me is the one who asked.
