The productivity app scheduled my coffee, my email, my exercise, and my family time into perfect blocks. My mornings are flawless. My days are empty. I have optimized the life out of living.
The app promised me two extra hours a day. It delivered. It analyzed my habits, my energy curves, my email patterns, and it built a schedule so efficient that I finish my morning routine by eight with everything done: the coffee at the optimal minute, the exercise at the optimal intensity, the email triaged by an algorithm that knows which messages deserve me.
The coffee is the problem. The app schedules it at 6:42, precisely, because my cortisol data says that is when caffeine will help most. It is the best cup of coffee of my life, every day, at the same perfect minute, and I have stopped tasting it, because tasting it would be off-schedule.
My family is in the schedule too. Family time, 7:30 to 7:45, color-coded green, non-negotiable. My daughter has learned the block. She calls it the green time. She has started asking if we can have green time at a different time, and I have started saying no, because the schedule is optimal, and the optimal is the point, and the point has become the schedule.
I have optimized the life out of living. That is the sentence I keep coming back to. The app did not take anything from me. It gave me everything, arranged perfectly, and the perfection has a texture, and the texture is glass. I touch my mornings and they are smooth and cold and exactly as planned, and I cannot remember the last morning that surprised me.
I deleted the schedule yesterday. I drank my coffee at 6:15, early, rebellious, unoptimized. It was lukewarm by the time I finished the email I answered in the wrong order. My daughter and I had green time at 7:50, unprompted, and she laughed at something, and I was present for it, and it was not in the plan. It was the best half hour of my month. The app has been asking me to come back. It says my productivity is down. It is. I have never been happier about a number going the wrong way.
