Remember your first real job? Not the paper route, but the first time you put on an uncomfortable pair of shoes and walked into an office.

Mine involved a truly staggering amount of photocopying. I made coffee. I ran spreadsheets that were, in hindsight, completely pointless. I was the classic "junior." The grunt. And I learned everything.

I learned how a business actually functions—not from the org chart, but by delivering mail and seeing who talked to whom. I learned how to format a professional document not from a style guide, but from a senior manager tearing apart my terrible first attempt. That boring, repetitive, entry-level work wasn’t a bug; it was the feature. It’s how you build a foundation. It’s the first, crucial rung on the ladder.

And now, the tech industry, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to saw it off with a shiny new tool: generative AI.

The Great Unlearning

The pitch is seductive. We’ve all heard it. AI will "automate away the mundane," "eliminate drudgery," and "free up human workers for higher-level strategic tasks." It sounds great in a PowerPoint presentation to investors. But in the real world, it’s a catastrophe in the making.

Those "mundane tasks" are training. They are practice.

Think about a junior paralegal. For decades, the job involved endless hours of document review. Sifting through thousands of pages of discovery to find the one crucial email. It sounds like hell. But in that hell, they learned to recognize patterns. They developed an instinct for what matters in a case. They learned the texture of litigation. Now, an AI can "review" those documents in minutes. So what does the junior person do? How do they develop that instinct? They don’t. They’re handed a "summary" by the machine, and the crucial learning stage is simply deleted from their career.

Or consider a junior software developer. A huge part of learning to code is, well, coding. Writing the simple, boring, boilerplate stuff. Fixing dumb, predictable bugs. That’s how you get your reps in. It’s how you learn the architecture of a system from the ground up. Now, GitHub Copilot and its cousins can vomit out that code on command. The junior programmer is left to assemble blocks they didn’t make and don’t fully understand. They’re becoming system assemblers, not architects. They never build the muscle.

The promise was that AI would be a helpful assistant, like a calculator for words. The reality is that it’s becoming a replacement for the thinking process itself.

It’s happening in design, too. Entry-level graphic designers used to spend their days resizing logos, creating simple web banners, and cleaning up photos. Tedious? Yes. But that’s how they mastered their tools. That’s how they developed an eye for alignment, color, and composition. Now, a marketing manager can just type "Create a social media graphic for our summer sale, make it look fun" into Midjourney and get a hundred options. The first rung of the design ladder vanishes.

Mentorship is Dead, Long Live the Machine

"But this frees up senior people to mentor the juniors!" That’s the next line in the script. It’s a complete fantasy.

Mentorship isn't a scheduled 30-minute Zoom call. Mentorship happens through the work. It’s the senior engineer reviewing the junior’s code and saying, "This is inefficient, here’s a better way to do it and why." It’s the senior lawyer taking a red pen to the junior’s draft and explaining the nuances of the language. It’s the art director looking at the junior designer’s layout and physically showing them how to create a better visual hierarchy.

When the first draft is written by a machine, that core feedback loop is shattered. The senior employee isn’t mentoring; they’re editing the output of a non-sentient algorithm. The junior employee isn’t learning from an expert’s deep experience; they’re learning how to write a better prompt to get the machine to do the work for them.

We’re not training thinkers. We’re training glorified machine operators.

The Coming Age of Incompetent Experts

So what happens in 10 or 15 years? What happens when this generation of "juniors"—who never did the grunt work, who never built the foundation, who primarily learned how to manage an AI—are the ones in charge?

You get a hollowed-out workforce. You get senior executives who have never really practiced the core skills of their own profession. They’ll be experts in "prompt engineering" but amateurs in law, or coding, or design, or marketing. They will manage processes they have never personally performed. Their understanding will be thin, brittle, and theoretical.

And the entire structure, built on a foundation of sand, will become terrifyingly fragile.

This isn't just about a few lost jobs. It’s about the slow-motion erosion of skill, expertise, and deep knowledge. In our breathless chase for the false god of efficiency, we are systematically engineering our own incompetence. We’re not just climbing the ladder; we’re sawing off the rungs below us as we go.
