I’ve lost count of the number of tech evangelists who’ve looked me in the eye and promised that AI is here to free us. "It'll handle the boring stuff," they say, "so humans can focus on high-level strategy and creativity."
It sounds great. It’s also a complete fantasy.
Generative AI isn’t killing the drudgery. It’s killing the opportunity. It’s not coming for the corner office; it’s coming for the mailroom, the intern desk, the junior associate position. It’s a machine designed to permanently occupy the entry-level, and in doing so, it’s sawing off the bottom rungs of the professional ladder.
This isn't some far-off dystopia. It's happening right now, in plain sight.
The Great De-Skilling
Think about how people learn a profession. Any profession. You don’t start out as a senior partner, a lead developer, or a creative director. You start at the bottom. You do the grunt work. The "boring stuff."
A junior copywriter learns the trade by churning out hundreds of social media posts and product descriptions. A novice programmer cuts their teeth on writing simple scripts, fixing minor bugs, and creating unit tests. A paralegal spends their first years summarizing depositions and doing document review.
This work is repetitive, yes. But it’s not meaningless. It’s the training ground. It’s how you develop a gut feeling for what works and what doesn’t. It’s how you learn the fundamentals so deeply that they become second nature. It’s how you earn the right to eventually tackle the "high-level strategy."
Now, what happens when a company can fire up a large language model and get passable versions of that work for pennies on the dollar? What happens when a tool like GitHub Copilot can autocomplete the very code that a junior developer was supposed to write to learn the ropes?
The intern, the apprentice, the junior associate—they are being replaced by a subscription service.
The initial pitch for these tools was that they’d be a "copilot" for the expert. A handy assistant. But the real-world business case is much simpler, and much more brutal: why hire a junior employee who needs training, benefits, and a salary when an API call can produce "good enough" work instantly?
The Experience Paradox on Steroids
We’ve all heard of the classic career roadblock: You can’t get a job without experience, but you can’t get experience without a job. Generative AI takes that paradox and injects it with steroids.
Now, companies don’t even have to create the job to get the work done.
This creates a terrifying chasm. On one side, you have a shrinking population of senior professionals who got their training before these tools took over. They’re the ones who know how to prompt the AI, how to edit its output, and how to spot its subtle, nonsensical mistakes. On the other side, you have a massive pool of bright, ambitious young people with no way to break in. No path to gain the very experience required to become one of the senior editors.
Where do the next generation of experts come from? How does a writer develop a unique voice when their first drafts are all written by a machine? How does a programmer learn elegant architecture when they’ve only ever patched together AI-generated snippets? How does a lawyer develop a keen sense for a case when they’ve never done the painstaking work of discovery?
They don’t. The skills atrophy. The pipeline of talent dries up. And the professions themselves become hollowed out, dominated by a handful of "prompt whisperers" who are merely gatekeepers to the machine.
